Dinner Is Served — Baby's First Pretend Play

For babies around 11.5 months old · Pretend Play · Social-Emotional Development · Language

Why this week matters

Something magical is beginning around your baby's first birthday: the very first sparks of imagination. Early pretend play doesn't look like elaborate make-believe — it's simple, one-step copying of things your baby sees every day. Holding a cup to a doll's mouth. Patting a teddy to sleep. These tiny moments matter because your baby is showing they can hold an idea in their mind ("this doll is like a baby") and act on it. That's the seed of imagination, empathy, and storytelling.

This week's activity: Feed the doll

You'll need: a soft doll or favourite teddy, a small steel katori or cup, a baby spoon, and a small towel or handkerchief to use as a blanket.

  1. Sit with your baby and introduce the doll warmly: "This is our baby! Say hello!"
  2. Model one simple action slowly: "Baby is hungry. Let's give khana." Hold the spoon to the doll's mouth and make a small eating sound — "mmm!"
  3. Offer the spoon to your little one and wait. Don't worry if they copy you right away or just watch — watching is learning too.
  4. Add one more step when they're ready: "Baby drank water. Now baby is sleepy." Pat the doll gently and cover it with the towel. "Shhh, good night."
  5. Narrate what your baby does: "You fed the baby! The baby is so happy." Specific words like these tell your child their play is meaningful.

Make it your own: Use whatever your baby watches you do daily — pretend to comb the doll's hair, wipe its face after "eating", or take it for a walk in a basket. Babies only imitate what they've seen, so your everyday routines are the perfect script.

What your baby is learning

  • Symbolic thinking — treating a doll like a real baby is your child's first step towards using one thing to stand for another, the same mental skill behind language and reading.
  • Empathy and care — feeding, patting, and tucking in a doll lets your baby practise gentle, nurturing behaviour they've received from you.
  • Language — simple play scripts ("hungry", "eat", "sleep", "good night") repeat useful words in a rich, memorable context.

Good to know

Keep pretend food props big and safe — real spoons and katoris are fine under supervision, but skip anything small enough to swallow. And if your baby isn't interested in the doll yet, that's completely normal; early pretend play emerges anywhere from 11 to 18 months. Every baby develops at their own pace — keep modelling, and one day you'll catch them feeding teddy all by themselves.
