How Babies Learn the Complex Sounds of Speech
Before your baby says their first word, they have already pulled off one of the most remarkable learning feats in nature: decoding the sound system of their native language. By around 12 months, their brain has mapped the specific sounds, called phonemes, that matter in their language and begun filtering out the ones that do not. This invisible process, happening entirely behind the scenes during everyday interactions, is what makes human language possible.

Simple Ways to Support It at Home
You do not need flash cards or language apps. The most powerful thing you can do is exactly what comes naturally: talk to your baby, respond to them, and interact face-to-face. Speak in parentese, that warm, slightly exaggerated, sing-song voice. It is not silly, it is pedagogically perfect, because it stretches vowels and emphasizes the contrasts between sounds, making them easier to categorize.
Talk a lot, since the sheer volume of language your baby hears in the first year is linked to stronger phonological awareness later. Respond to babbling by talking back, imitating, and expanding, which teaches your baby that their sound experiments carry social meaning. Read aloud, because books offer sound patterns and words they would not meet in everyday chat. And stay face-to-face: your baby learns partly by watching how your lips, tongue, and jaw move, which is one reason live interaction beats screen-based audio.
If your family speaks more than one language, do not worry about confusing your baby. Bilingual babies go through the same narrowing while keeping sensitivity to both languages. Their vocabulary in each language may look smaller at 12 months, but their total across both is typically equal or greater, alongside well-documented cognitive benefits. Consistency helps, for example one parent speaking Hindi and the other English, so your baby's brain can organize the two systems.

Babbling, cooing, watching your mouth, and experimenting with sounds are all healthy signs at this age, and every baby moves at their own pace. To support the environment, reduce background noise during focused interaction, since babies filter competing sounds less efficiently than adults. Limit screens (the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time under 18 months apart from video chatting) and prioritize live human voices.
