Little Cruiser, Big Steps
For babies around 12 months old · Gross Motor · Balance · Confidence
Why this week matters
Around the first birthday, many babies are pulling up on everything, side-stepping along the sofa, and maybe even letting go for a wobbly second or two. This sideways walking while holding on — called cruising — is how your baby builds the leg strength, balance, and confidence needed for independent walking. Every shuffle along the furniture is a rehearsal for those magical first steps, whether they come this month or a few months from now.
This week's activity: The furniture course
You'll need: A sofa, a low sturdy table or bed, a chair or stool that will not tip, a few favourite toys, and a clear patch of floor.
- Choose a safe corner of your home and arrange the sofa, table, and chair so there are small gaps of 20–30 cm between them — close enough that your baby can reach across, far enough to feel like a tiny adventure.
- Place a favourite toy at the far end of the course, just out of reach, so your baby has a reason to travel.
- Stand your baby at the sofa and let them cruise towards the toy. Cheer for every step and every brave reach across a gap.
- Once the course feels easy, widen one gap slightly so your baby has to briefly let go of one surface before catching the next.
- End with the reward: let your baby sit down, grab the toy, and enjoy it. Then reset and go again if they are keen!
Make it your own: Add a slow-moving target — a pull-along toy that you inch forward as your baby follows gives them a moving reason to keep going. Or turn the course into a family game where your baby cruises from Mumma's knees to Papa's knees and back.
What your baby is learning
- Balance and weight shifting — cruising teaches your baby to move weight from one leg to the other, the core skill behind walking.
- Motor planning — judging the gap between the sofa and the table and deciding how to cross it is real problem-solving with the whole body.
- Confidence and persistence — every wobble, plop, and get-up-again builds the "I can try" attitude that matters far beyond walking.

Good to know
Choose furniture that cannot tip over, pad any sharp corners, and stay within arm's reach — plopping onto the bottom is part of learning, but falls near hard edges are not. Skip walkers with wheels; cruising and floor play are safer ways to build the same skills. And remember: some babies walk at 10 months, many closer to 15 or 16 months, and all of that is normal. Your baby is on their own beautiful timeline.
