One Year of Play — Celebrate and Look Ahead

For babies around 12+ months old · Memory · Language · Celebration of Everything!

Why this week matters

One year ago, your baby could see clearly only up to about 30 cm and could barely lift their head. This week, they may be cruising, pointing, clapping, babbling with real intent, and solving little puzzles like "where did the ball go?" That journey — from gazing at black-and-white cards to purposeful, curious play — happened one ordinary day at a time, mostly in your arms and on your floor. This week is for celebrating it, and for peeking at what toddlerhood will bring: walking, first words, pretend play, and big feelings.

This week's activity: The greatest-hits play party

You'll need: A basket, five or six of your baby's favourite toys from across the year (a rattle, a ball, cups or bowls, a soft book, a hiding scarf), and a phone to capture a few memories.

  1. Set the toys out in a row on the floor and let your baby crawl or cruise over to choose. Watch what they reach for first — their choice tells you what skill they are working on right now.
  2. Replay old favourites with a twist: hide the rattle under the scarf and let your expert un-hider find it, roll the ball back and forth, stack the bowls and let them crash it down.
  3. Narrate the memories as you play: "You loved shaking this when you were tiny!" Your baby understands far more words than they can say.
  4. Take a photo of your baby with the toy basket — a lovely bookend next to their newborn pictures.
  5. Finish with a family clap and a loud "hooray!" — by now your baby may clap right back.

Make it your own: Invite grandparents to join on a video call and let your baby "show" each toy to the screen. Or make a simple photo book of the year's play moments and look through it together — babies this age love pictures of themselves.

What your baby is learning

  • Memory and recognition — revisiting familiar toys strengthens the growing memory networks that toddler learning is built on.
  • Language through storytelling — hearing you narrate their own story bathes your baby in rich, meaningful words.
  • Connection and confidence — celebrating together tells your child: my efforts matter, my people are cheering for me.

What's next in toddlerhood?

In the months ahead, expect steadier steps, first real words, feeding the doll and stirring pretend chai, and lots of pushing, carrying, and climbing. Your job stays the same: simple materials, a safe space, and your warm attention. The play only gets more fun from here.

Good to know

Birthday weeks can be busy and overstimulating for little ones — keep celebrations short, familiar, and close to nap times, and check that any new gift toys are free of small parts. Most of all, remember: whether your baby is walking or still perfecting their crawl, chattering or quietly observing, they are exactly where they need to be. Every baby develops at their own pace, and yours has had a wonderful first year of play.

This is Week 52 of the Kizoplay 52-Week Play Series — one simple, science-backed activity for every week of your baby's first year. Explore all our Montessori play kits at kizoplay.com
