Reach Out — Offering the First Rattle

For babies around 3 months old · Reaching & Grasping · Hand-Eye Coordination · Cause and Effect

Why this week matters

Welcome to month three — the month of hands! Until now, your baby's grip was mostly a reflex. Around this week, something wonderful begins: your baby starts to reach and grasp on purpose. Their eyes spot a toy, the brain plans a move, and a little hand swipes towards it. This eye-hand connection is one of the biggest developmental leaps of the first year, and every wobbly, missed reach is valuable practice.

This week's activity: Offering the first rattle

You'll need: a lightweight rattle or any small, safe, easy-to-hold object — a wooden spoon with a smooth handle, a small steel bangle (too big to swallow, with no sharp edges), or a soft fabric ring.

  1. Lay your baby on their back, or hold them semi-reclined in your lap, when they are calm and alert.
  2. Hold the rattle about 20–25 cm above their chest, slightly to one side. Give it a soft shake so the sound catches their attention.
  3. Wait. Let your baby look at it, wave their arms, and try to reach. Resist the urge to place it straight into their hand — the trying is the exercise.
  4. If they touch or swipe it, celebrate! After a few tries, gently touch the rattle to the back of their fingers — this invites the hand to open — and let them close their grip around it.
  5. Once they are holding it, let them shake, wave and explore (it will likely go to the mouth — that is normal learning). Repeat on the other side so both hands get a turn.

Make it your own: Try the same game during tummy time, placing the rattle on the floor just within reach to encourage a mini push-and-reach. You can also slow things down: hold the rattle still and simply let your baby study it before reaching — watching is part of planning.

What your baby is learning

  • Hand-eye coordination — connecting what the eyes see with what the hands do is the foundation for feeding themselves, stacking blocks and, one day, writing.
  • Intentional grasping — moving from reflex to purposeful gripping strengthens hand muscles and control.
  • Cause and effect — "I shake it, it makes a sound!" is one of your baby's very first science experiments.
  • Auditory tracking — locating a sound and turning towards it sharpens listening skills that support language.

Good to know

Choose rattles and household objects that are too large to swallow, with no small or loose parts, and always stay close while your baby explores — everything will go to the mouth at this age, and that is a healthy way to learn. If your baby is not reaching yet, no worries at all: every baby develops at their own pace, and simply watching the rattle is a great start.
