Sitting Pretty: Supported Sitting and Tray Play

For babies around 5.5 months old · Core Strength · Balance · Focused Play

Why this week matters

Somewhere around five to six months, your baby's world starts to tilt upright. With a little support, many babies can now sit and see the room the way we do — and this new view changes everything. Sitting frees both hands for play, strengthens the back and tummy muscles, and gives your baby their first taste of playing at a "workstation", just like they will one day at a table. Supported sitting now lays the groundwork for steady, independent sitting in the weeks ahead.

This week's activity: The Cushion Corner Tray Café

You'll need: firm cushions or rolled blankets, a steel thali or a shallow tray, and 2–3 simple toys — a wooden rattle, a soft ball, or a rocking toy that wobbles when tapped.

  1. Set up a cosy corner on the floor: sit your baby with their back supported by your body or by firm cushions arranged behind and beside them. Their bottom should be flat on the floor, legs in a wide "V" for balance.
  2. Place the thali or tray on the floor between their legs, within easy reach.
  3. Put ONE toy on the tray. One at a time keeps attention deep instead of scattered — a very Montessori idea.
  4. Let your baby reach, grasp, bang, and drop. The clang of a toy on a steel thali is usually a huge hit!
  5. When interest fades, calmly swap in the next toy. Ten focused minutes is a wonderful session at this age.

Make it your own: Try a wobbly, roly-poly style toy on the tray — baby taps it, it swings back, and the game never ends. Or sit baby between your legs facing a mirror so they can watch themselves play.

What your baby is learning

  • Core and back strength — every minute of supported sitting builds the muscles needed for independent sitting and, later, crawling.
  • Balance reactions — small wobbles teach the brain to make tiny corrections, the beginning of true balance.
  • Two-handed play — with hands free from holding the body up, baby can now hold, pass, and bang objects — big news for coordination.
  • Focus and attention — one toy on a clear tray helps your baby practise concentrating on one thing at a time.

Good to know

Stay within arm's reach the whole time — supported sitters can topple sideways or backwards without warning, so cushion all sides and never leave baby propped up alone. Keep sessions short and stop when baby slumps or fusses; tired muscles need rest to grow. And as always, every baby develops at their own pace — some sit steadily at six months, others closer to eight. Both are completely normal.
