Squish, Press, Wonder: Your Baby's First Sensory Bag

For babies around 3.5 months old · Sensory Exploration · Tummy Time · Touch Development

Why this week matters

At three and a half months, your baby's sense of touch is growing fast, and their hands are finally coordinated enough to press, pat, and swipe on purpose. New textures are fascinating right now — but most messy play is still months away. A sealed sensory bag is the perfect bridge: all the squish and colour of finger painting, with zero mess and nothing that can go into the mouth. It also makes tummy time far more interesting, right when your baby needs longer tummy sessions to build strength.

This week's activity: The no-mess squish bag

You'll need: One sturdy ziplock bag (the thick, freezer type), 3–4 spoons of any thick paste — plain curd, cooked and cooled suji, or atta mixed with water — a few drops of food colour, and strong tape.

  1. Spoon the paste into the ziplock bag and add a drop or two of food colour in different corners. Press out the extra air and seal it.
  2. Seal the bag inside a second ziplock for safety, then tape all four edges flat onto the floor or a tray so tiny fingers cannot lift or open it.
  3. Place your baby on their tummy with the bag just in front of their hands. Press it yourself first — the colours swirl and the bag squishes. Watch their eyes go wide!
  4. Guide their hand gently onto the bag once, then let them take over. Patting, pressing, scratching, swiping — every movement makes something happen.
  5. Talk about what you see: "You pressed it! Look, the yellow is moving!" Two to five minutes is a lovely session at this age.

Make it your own: Try a "cold version" by chilling the bag in the fridge for ten minutes — a gentle new sensation on a hot day. Or tape the bag to a window at your baby's eye level during supported sitting on your lap, so light glows through the colours.

What your baby is learning

  • Tactile discrimination — squishy, cool, smooth, lumpy: every new texture builds your baby's "touch vocabulary" and helps the brain organise sensory information.
  • Cause and effect — "my hand pressed, and the colour moved" teaches your baby that their actions change the world.
  • Tummy-time endurance — an irresistible target in front of the hands keeps babies happily on their tummies longer, strengthening the neck, shoulders, and arms.
  • Visual attention — swirling colours give your baby's developing eyes something rich and slow to study.

On days when you cannot set up a squish bag, the Sensory Book offers the same rich touch-and-discover experience in a grab-and-go form. Prop it open during tummy time and let your baby pat the crinkly pages — each one feels and sounds different, so the exploring never gets old.

Good to know

Always supervise sensory-bag play from start to finish, use food-safe fillings only, and throw the bag away after a day or two. Check the seals before every session, and keep the bag taped down so it cannot reach your baby's mouth. Some babies dive hands-first into new textures; others need several calm introductions — both styles are completely normal. Follow your baby's lead, and stop while it is still fun.
