Standing Tall — A Safe Cruising Setup

For babies around 9.5 months old · Gross Motor · Balance · Strength

Why this week matters

Somewhere around this age, many babies discover they can grab the edge of the sofa and haul themselves upright. Pulling up to stand is a huge milestone — it builds the leg, core, and grip strength your baby will need for cruising (side-stepping while holding furniture) and, eventually, walking. Your job this week is simple: make standing irresistible and make falling safe.

This week's activity: The pull-up station

You'll need: a low, sturdy piece of furniture (sofa, bed base, or a heavy diwan); a folded blanket or soft mat for the floor around it; 2–3 favourite toys.

  1. Clear a safe zone: move sharp-cornered tables away, lay a mat or folded razai on the floor around your chosen furniture, and check that nothing can tip over if pulled.
  2. Place a favourite toy on the sofa seat or low shelf — just high enough that your baby must pull up to reach it.
  3. Sit nearby and let your baby work at it. Grunting, wobbling, and plopping down are all part of the process — resist the urge to lift them up yourself.
  4. Once they're standing, slide the toy a little to one side along the surface. Reaching for it encourages the first sideways "cruising" steps.
  5. Show them how to get down: gently guide their hips to bend so they land on their bottom. Practising the landing is just as important as the climb.

Make it your own: Line up two pieces of furniture with a small gap between them to invite a brave sideways transfer. Or sit on the floor yourself and let your baby pull up on you — you're the safest furniture in the house.

What your baby is learning

  • Leg and core strength — every pull-up is a mini workout that prepares muscles for independent standing and walking.
  • Balance and weight shifting — cruising teaches your baby to move weight from one leg to the other, the basic pattern of walking.
  • Motor planning — figuring out where to place hands and feet to get up (and down!) is problem solving with the whole body.
  • Confidence — succeeding after many wobbly tries teaches your baby that effort pays off.

Good to know

Once babies can pull up, they can reach new things — do a quick sweep for dangling cords, tablecloths, and unstable furniture, and lower the cot mattress if you haven't already. Expect plenty of tumbles onto the bottom; that's how landing is learned. And as always, every baby develops at their own pace — some stand at 8 months, others closer to 12, and both are perfectly normal.
