Toes, Meet Hands: The Joy of Foot Play

For babies around 5 months old · Body Awareness · Motor Coordination · Core Strength

Why this week matters

Around five months, many babies make a delightful discovery: they have feet! Reaching for the toes is more than a cute photo moment — it is serious work for your baby's tummy muscles, hips, and brain. Every time your little one lifts those legs and grabs a foot, they are building the core strength they will soon need for rolling, sitting, and crawling, and they are learning where their body begins and ends.

This week's activity: The Toe-Catching Game

You'll need: a firm, flat surface (a playmat or folded blanket on the floor), a pair of colourful or jingly socks, and a few minutes after a nappy change when baby is happy and bare-legged.

  1. Lay your baby on their back on a firm surface. Bare legs work best — less fabric between hands and toes!
  2. Slip a brightly coloured or gently jingling sock onto one of baby's feet. The colour and sound draw their eyes (and hands) toward it.
  3. Gently lift baby's foot into their line of sight and wiggle it while you chat: "Look, there's your foot! Can you catch it?"
  4. Let go and give your baby time to reach, grab, and pull. If they bring the foot to their mouth, that's perfectly normal exploration — celebrate it.
  5. Swap the sock to the other foot after a few minutes so both sides of the body get a turn.

Make it your own: Sing "This Little Piggy" in your home language while touching each toe — the rhythm and touch together make the game richer. Or try the game with baby lying on your lap facing you, so they get your smiling face as a bonus reward.

What your baby is learning

  • Body awareness — grabbing the feet teaches your baby the map of their own body, a foundation for all future movement.
  • Core strength — lifting the legs and holding them up is like a mini workout for the tummy muscles used in rolling and sitting.
  • Hand-eye (and hand-foot!) coordination — seeing a moving target, reaching, and grasping it is precision practice for the fingers and brain.
  • Cause and effect — when the sock jingles as the leg kicks, baby starts to connect "I moved, and something happened."

Good to know

Always play on a firm, flat surface and stay close — babies this age can surprise you with a sudden roll! Remove the rattle socks before sleep, and check regularly that all parts are secure. And remember: some babies find their feet at four months, others closer to six. Every baby develops at their own pace — if yours isn't toe-grabbing yet, keep offering relaxed, bare-leg floor time and it will come.
