Tummy Time Starts on Your Chest

For babies around 3 weeks old · Tummy Time · Motor Development · Bonding

Why this week matters

Around three weeks, your baby is ready to start building the muscles that will one day lift that wobbly head, push up, roll, and crawl. Tummy time is how those muscles get their workout — but many newborns protest when placed flat on the floor. The gentle secret? Your chest. Reclining with your baby tummy-down on you counts fully as tummy time, and it comes with your heartbeat, your warmth, and your face as the reward for every tiny lift.

This week's activity: Micro tummy time on your chest

You'll need: a sofa or bed with pillows to prop yourself up, a calm moment after a nap or nappy change (not right after a feed), and a burp cloth.

  1. Recline at roughly a 45-degree angle — comfortable, but not lying flat. The slight slope makes head-lifting easier for your baby.
  2. Place your baby tummy-down on your chest, head near your collarbone, and keep a steady hand on their back at all times.
  3. Talk or sing softly. Your voice invites your baby to try lifting or turning their head towards your face. A one-second bobble is a genuine push-up at this age!
  4. Aim for two to three minutes, two or three times a day. Short and frequent beats long and tearful every time.
  5. End before your baby gets upset, with a cuddle. You want tummy time to feel like a happy habit, not a chore.

Make it your own: Try it skin-to-skin after a bath — the contact is calming and helps regulate your baby's temperature and heartbeat. Once your baby seems strong and content on your chest, try a minute on a firm, flat surface like a play mat on the floor, with your face down at their level as encouragement.

What your baby is learning

  • Neck and shoulder strength — every micro-lift builds the muscles needed for head control, rolling, sitting, and crawling.
  • Body awareness — feeling your chest rise and fall teaches your baby about their own body position and movement.
  • Security and trust — your heartbeat and voice tell your baby's nervous system that hard work can happen in a safe place.

Good to know

Tummy time is always awake time, with you watching closely — never let your baby sleep on their tummy or on your chest unsupervised. On the floor, use a firm, flat surface, not a soft bed or pillow. And if your baby fusses through a session, that's okay; try again later. Every baby develops at their own pace, and even 30 happy seconds at a time adds up beautifully over the weeks.
