Wobble, Sit, Balance!

For babies around 6.5 months old · Gross Motor · Core Strength · Balance

Why this week matters

Somewhere around the middle of the first year, most babies begin working hard on sitting. First they tripod (leaning forward on their hands), then they sit for a few seconds, wobble, and topple softly sideways. Every wobble is actually the point: each tiny correction teaches your baby's core muscles and inner ear how to keep the body upright. Strong, steady sitting frees both hands for play — and those same trunk muscles will soon power crawling, when babies learn to coordinate both sides of the body. So this week, we play games that make wobbling fun.

This week's activity: The wobble circle

You'll need: a firm mattress or folded blanket on the floor, two or three cushions or pillows, and one toy that moves or rocks — a rolling ball, a steel katori that spins, or a roly-poly toy.

  1. Sit your baby on the firm surface and arrange the cushions in a loose circle around them, like soft walls. Sit facing them, close enough to catch a big topple.
  2. Place the rocking or rolling toy just in front of your baby and give it a gentle tap so it wobbles. Wobbly toys are irresistible — your baby will reach for it, and reaching is balance practice in disguise.
  3. Slowly move the toy a little to the left, then the right, so your baby turns and shifts weight to follow it.
  4. Next, hold the toy slightly above eye level for a second or two — looking up challenges balance in a new way.
  5. When your baby topples (they will!), smile, say "Whoops, up we go!" and help them sit again. Keep the mood light so falling feels safe.

Make it your own: Try the same game with your baby sitting between your legs for extra support if independent sitting is still new. For steadier sitters, place the toy a little farther away so they must lean and return upright — the baby version of a gym workout.

What your baby is learning

  • Core and back strength — the muscles that hold your baby upright now are the same ones that will support crawling, standing and walking later.
  • Balance reactions — tiny catches and corrections train the vestibular system, your baby's inner sense of where their body is in space.
  • Weight shifting — turning and leaning while seated is direct preparation for getting into the crawling position.
  • Confidence with falling — learning that a soft topple is no big deal keeps babies brave about trying new movements.

Good to know

Always practise sitting on the floor, never on a bed or sofa where a topple can become a fall. Stay within arm's reach, and stop when your baby slumps or fusses — tired muscles need rest to grow. Every baby develops at their own pace: some sit steadily at six months, others closer to nine. Both are perfectly normal, so adjust the support to your baby, not the calendar.
