Why this week matters

At one month old, your baby is becoming a keen listener. They already prefer your voice over every other sound, and their brain is quietly mapping the rhythm of your language — long before any words come. Scientists call the back-and-forth between you and your baby "serve and return": you speak (serve), your baby responds with a wriggle, a coo, or wide eyes (return), and you respond again. These tiny exchanges are one of the most powerful builders of language and brain development in the whole first year.

This week's activity: Talk, pause, repeat

You'll need: nothing but your voice and a quiet, calm moment — after a feed or a nappy change works well.

Hold your baby about 25–30 cm from your face, where they can see you clearly. Wait until they look at you.
Say something short and warm in your natural sing-song voice: "Hello, my sweet one! Did you sleep well?" Any language you speak at home is perfect.
Now pause. Count slowly to five or ten in your head. This silence is the magic part — you are leaving space for your baby's "turn".
Watch for any reply: a mouth movement, a kick, a little "ah", a bright look. When it comes, respond as if it were words: "Really? You did? Tell me more!"
Keep the conversation going for a few rounds. When your baby looks away or gets fidgety, that's their way of saying the chat is over for now.

Make it your own: Narrate everyday routines the same way — "Now we're washing your little toes… splash!" — pausing for a response each time. If your home is bilingual, take turns in both languages; babies' brains handle this beautifully.

Keep sounds soft and close — newborn ears are sensitive, so there's no need for loud toys or screens; your voice is truly the best sound in the world to your baby. Always supervise play with any rattle. And remember, every baby develops at their own pace: some are chatty responders at four weeks, others reply mostly with quiet, focused stares. Both are wonderful conversations.
